Forer Effect Suite: astrology, chinese zodiac, stones, flowers etc

Wikipedia wrote:
The Forer Effect (also called personal validation fallacy or the Barnum Effect after P. T. Barnum‘s observation that ‘we’ve got something for everyone’) is the observation that individuals will give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically for them, but are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people.

I’ve created a suite of addons to add to your site when you have a lot of members participating and are interested to know about each others… Meeting, Match-Making sites, Personal Ads etc, this suite can be a good enhancement for you.

Instead of having daily astrology, this tool provide a description of each personality related to the member’s profile… All that is needed is the birthday of the member. Astrology, Chinese Zodiac and others are all driven by the date of birth’s information, and your members can enter their info without having to modify your forum.

So here is a demo in screenshot of the Astrology engine; the others are working the exact same way, with some tweaks to fit each others… (example, the chinese zodiac have a whole calculation process to identify your real chinese sign, not the usual basic 2 dots calculation you find on the internet)…

The default texts related to each elements of the suite can be changed, to fit your needs. They are documented with tons of references to each signs, but you may prefer more inspired details…

Here is the screenshot of the Usergroup management. It is quite easy to manage who and how, as there is nothing else to manage than view/activate.

The settings are also very easy to figure out… each Set have its own config panel, so you are not lost in the different ways to display the featurettes.

The user side of things, where each user can activate their astrology when possible… in the UserCP >> Edit Options

And the result… this is the default location when shown below the user signature in the old vB 3.5x, but look similar to all other blocks in the new vB 3.7…

Note: the files included in this release are the obsolete ones, which cover the 3.0 and 3.5 Legacy versions of vBulletin. Next release planned for september 2012 will contain the engine for 3.6 and above, thru 4.9.9 …

  1. the engine is ready, we will release it in the next days, and we’re releasing it with all the sets here: Astrology, Chinese Zodiac, Flowers and Stone of Birth.

Cool beans people love these things.

It would be cool if the saying updated each day also. But as I understand it, it’s not really what this is about about right?

  3. This version is not a daily astrology, but one is planned… it is complicated because daily astrology is always based on a professional of this thing, with releases and charges for the content.

Will you be able to add your own information to this? Being an astrologer (amongst other things), it’d be handy if it had the capability of that as an administrator could make their own astrological content as needed (f they had the knowledge).

Also, have you considered adding Tarot/Runes to this – for a daily rune/tarot reading. I’m no coder, but having it generate a random card or rune when a user clicked would probably be an interesting addition – again with the ability for the adminstrator to add their own interpretations.

  5. sure, if you know what you are writing, this could be interesting as a new feature to add to the engine, let the admins add their content.

for the rune, tarot etc, i just need to document myself on how they are set per person etc, but i suppose there are resources on the net that explain all this… i’ve done it for the chinese zodiac… 🙂

For Tarot you have the major and minor arcanas – which consist in total of 78 cards. Each card has its own generic meaning, it only gets complex when it’s used in a reading with other cards surrounding it. If you wanted to “show off” you could also add inverted meaning – which is when the card is drawn upside down and usually has an opposite meaning to the upright card.

Runes – using the Futhark set (which is the most popular) again they each have a generic meaning that could be used – and again they only become complex when used with each other and not singularly).

Thinking on my feet, if you had an image of.. say… a tarot deck in a pile… which the user clicked, it could pull out a random card (either upright or reversed (upside down) ) and the meaning beneath it. A lot people use the tarot in this way, pulling a card a day as just an insight into how their day might develop. You could do something similar with the runes – have an image of a bag of runes which the user clicks… then the code randomly pulls out a rune and its meaning.

if you need any info on either runes or tarot, (or any other divination technique, just yell.. it’s something I’ve been using for over 20 years 🙂 )

  7. sure, i’d be delighted to have help on this topic, i did all the rest my hand, reading and learning the details of things i’m not into, so imagine if i had help… and i have a magnificient designer who could help with the cards etc, i’m sure… 🙂

Whatever you need, just let me know. I can write up a load of generic meanings both tarot and runes.

Generic meanings for astrology I’m not so good with as I write natal charts for people which incorporate all planetary positions and little focus is given to the sun sign.

  9. yeah, custom things are always more complicated… good to know if you want to offer the service though.. :
