i’m building with Joomla today…

I have a website to build for the Sync-Swim club i’m the CEO of, and even if i built the whole Calendar enhancements package for that purpose only, i will switch to Joomla and use their forum and calendar extensions, because they are more secure and easier to integrate with the large collection of themes built commercially for Joomla.

so we will have a go with Joomla comparaisons.. lol

i started looking at the Joomla system and goals… quite impressive community of coders, i like the way they deal with commercial / non-commercial releases…

anyway, their system is more of “single client” with unique goals… WordPress MU is more “multiple blogs with a single database, making it really heavy on the serverside if multiple databases are not used… and it’s not really into communities but single entities.

i want our system to be all of that and more… rofl

i will surely use this theme: Joomla Templates – RocketTheme Joomla Templates Club Demo Site on Joomla for the Sync-swim club… with a different background, but the goal of the template with all its addons is amazingly large.

    How would that be done?

  4. nexia dit :

simple, we offer the flexibility of multiple sites, but also the possibility for a client to have its own installation for a single site. “logically” it is a single switch, enabling a lot more features when we want the multi-site, like dB sharing, etc.

globally, what we need is to seperate everything User DB… build the functions and content to seperate the users info from the rest… stats etc will be made per site protocol, so the user authentication will hit a single table that can be on any database, shared…

as example, if a webmaster decided after a move to share the userDB, we just have to add the name of the database, and everything will be read from there instead of the original… by the move, the script will simply add the data to the new “host db”…

see?… lol anyway, this is not the thread to talk about our structure.

also, after evaluation, to have a good calendar and events manager for Joomla i would have to code my own.. they are all basic and not multi-users… crap, the only calendar with everything needed is MY version … rofl

so after evaluation of the needs and resources available, i will switch that site to Joomla completely, to be able to have a real forum, because there are some in the joomla universe… and a calendar, events manager etc…

will be less complicated to learn how joomla work instead of spoiling all my time building a new theme for vB that will be obsolete with 4.0 anyway…

compared to Joomla, vB is just shit… rofl

  6. nexia dit :

the only draw is the 28Mb of the basic install, and the default theme which is horrible, but even better than any custom 3rd party theme in vBulletin…

that’s amazing how the vB market is abandonned… no real efficient theme like the rockettheme.com company can do, and the number of verified products related to it.. and Joomla is way younger than vB…

  7. Drew dit :

Yeah our system should just include a very basic default theme and then we contract a design team to make themes for our clients

  8. nexia dit :

we will also give a “Seal of Approval” for designers and coders… i want that… 🙂

  9. Drew dit :

Yeah we should also hire a design team to make 5 unique professional styles to show how extendable our system is

  10. nexia dit :

yeap… please do not look at any of vB designers.. they are all incompetents…

  11. Drew dit :

vBImageworks was probably the best for vb…
But still we would look at a serious design company

nah, when i posted my thread this morning, Shelley felt insulted i think… i was saying there was no real designer for vB… which is completely true.. Shelley is not only a designer, she’s a brain, which no other vb styler is able to be…

Mert on his side is a great designer, but he is not fond on vB, he is more with a great system like we want to implement, with full CSS skeleton etc…

Joomla Templates – RocketTheme Joomla Templates Club Demo Site this is a real theme for an engine… there is nowhere on the internet to find a theme like this for vB…

  13. Drew dit :

vb themes all have the same base look because no user wants to install a theme that modifies a lot of the templates. This is why in our system we will have two main templates shell and widget_shell which our pretty self explanatory widget_shell goes around every block. Also users will be able choose layouts for there site (2 columns, 3 columns, etc.) and then each column can also have its own widget shell template making it possible to have a “sidebar” with a slightly different look then the main content.

  14. nexia dit :

    like this:
    module-positions.jpg

i call that a skeleton… we can provide a lot of these to designers who can easily switch elements in them…

this is how css Zen Garden: The Beauty in CSS Design is built upon… a skeleton, and is modified within the CSS file… *(check other designs — only the css change)

  15. Drew dit :

    Yeah exactly lol

  16. nexia dit :

oh, just to inform everybody… JFusion, good but not complete… a real pain to install, like the other products for vB. problem is not Joomla but vBulletin. it’s a snap to install with phpBB… 🙂

so i flip my shorts and continue to use vB and will hire a designer to port the style i want.
